During the time when 3,000 HP 16-cylinder prime movers were the norm, EMD made the decision to introduce a 20-cylinder, 3600 HP design. Introduced in 1965, the SD45, with its distinctive flared radiator design, was purchased by many major US railroads, totaling over 1,200 units until the SD45-2 replaced it in the EMD catalog in 1972.

The SD45 did have some teething problems, most notably crankshaft failures. EMD did provide a means to remedy this issue, but some railroads chose to derate the SD45 to 3,000 HP, or in some cases replace the prime mover with the 16-cylinder 3,000 HP as utilized in the SD40-2. Most railroads decided that the extra 600 HP was pushing the limits of the 645 prime mover and preferred the reliability of the 16-cylinder design. The SD40-2 proved to be the best choice for many railroads. It would take a new design, the 710 series prime mover first featured in the SD50, for EMD to reach past 3,000 HP once again.

Many units are still in service today, most being rebuilt as mentioned. Some did retain the stock 20-cylinder prime mover, a beefed-up engine block mitigated crankshaft failures. It can be considered one of the most successful four-axle diesel road-switchers ever produced by the builder. These 1,600hp locomotives were powered by an ALCO 244 V-12 engine which was complimented by rugged GE electrical components. The RS-3 was truly a versatile locomotive. It could be found in virtually every type of service from passenger and commuter runs to heavy-haul and local freight assignments. Original owners of the RS-3 tended to be in the eastern and central regions of the US (with heavier concentrations in the northeast and southeast).

During this same time-period, ALCO offered a six-axle road-switcher which was more commonly found in the west. The RSD-4/5 was externally very similar to the RS-3, having six-axle trucks as an obvious spotting feature. They produced the same 1,600hp as an RS-3, but offered increased tractive effort due to the use of a larger generator. Many RSD-4/5s were assigned to operate in mountainous territory (with varying degrees of success) on the Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and the Utah Railway.

Features:

Golden-white LEDs

Directional lighting

Separately-applied painted handrails (where appropriate)

Blackened metal wheels

Scale Speed™ motor

Factory-installed AccuMate® magnetic knuckle couplers

Accurate painting and printing

Additional Features (2022 and later):

Atlas Silver Sound Ready models are equipped
with a speaker for easy conversion to sound with
the addition of a decoder.

DCC Operation Features (GOLD LOCOMOTIVES ONLY)

Supports all DCC-programming modes

DCC includes RailCom and RailComPlus, with 14, 28 or 128 speed steps and with 2-digit and 4-digit addressing.

Flexible mapping of function keys F0 to F28.

A total of 6 DCC function outputs are available, and all can be function mapped (disable, brightness, light effects) individually

Follows all NMRA DCC standards and recommended practices.

ESU LokSound Features (GOLD LOCOMOTIVES ONLY):

Over 20 sound effects are available, including engine start-up and shutdown, prime mover sounds through all eight notches, bell, air horn, air compressor,
dynamic brakes and more.

There are up to 16 user-selectable horns, 2 user-selectable bells, and 2 user-selectable synchronized brake squeals.

Manual and Automatic Notching modes with the ability to change modes ”on the fly” are provided for true realism.

Kato 176-7613 SD70M NS - Norfolk Southern #2581 (black, white) Standard DC N Scale

This Kato EMD SD70M with flat radiators is based on units in service from coast to coast since the 1990s. The B23-7 was a direct replacement for the 2,250HP U23B model. The first units were produced for Conrail in September, 1977 (ironically, 3 months after the last U23B was delivered to Conrail). Production continued through 1984, with a total of 535 units built. Conrail was the largest purchaser of the model, with a total fleet of 141 units.

Several features distinguished B23-7s from predecessor models. The long hood stepped outward in the area of the exhaust stack to accommodate a relocated oil cooler. In addition, the frame was 2 feet longer than that of the U23B. An FB-2 style truck was offered as standard equipment on B23-7s, but some railroads opted to use “trade-in” trucks. Therefore, AAR type B and Blomberg trucks could be found on some models. The six power assembly doors (located near the center of the long hood) indicated that the B23-7 was powered by a 12-cylinder GE FDL engine.

Features:

Directional lighting

Golden-white LEDs

Dual brass flywheels

Low-friction mechanism

Accurate painting and lettering

Factory-installed AccuMate® magnetic knuckle couplers

Manual and Automatic Notching modes with the ability to change modes ”on the fly” are provided for true realism.

atlas-40005470-ge-b23-7-sp-southern-pacific-7828-ditch-lights-red-gray-speed-lettering-dcc-sound-n-scale
Atlas 40005470 GE B30-7 SP Southern Pacific #7828 (Ditch Lights, red, gray, Speed Lettering) DCC & Sound N Scale

Atlas Gold 40005470 GE B30-7 SP Southern Pacific #7828 (Ditch Lights, red, gray, Speed Lettering) DCC & Sound N Scale. Picture may show a different road number.

General Electric’s “Dash 7” locomotive line was introduced as a replacement for the older “Universal-Series” of the 60s and early 70s. “Dash 7” series improvements included increased fuel efficiency, tractive effort and reliability. The B23-7 was a direct replacement for the 2,250HP U23B model. The first units were produced for Conrail in September, 1977 (ironically, 3 months after the last U23B was delivered to Conrail).
