LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) tank cars are specially designed railcars used for transporting LPG, typically propane and butane, under high pressure. These cars have also been known to carry other commodities such as anhydrous ammonia. They are high-pressure tank cars with varying capacities, commonly ranging from 17,000 to 34,000 gallons, and operate at pressures of up to 600 psi. The 33,000-gallon capacity has been a standard size for a long time.
These tank cars are constructed to meet specific DOT (Department of Transportation) standards, such as DOT 112J340W, to ensure safe transportation. They have a high-pressure tank with fittings like valves, gauges, and safety relief devices, often housed in a single enclosure. Some cars may include insulation and thermal protection depending on the specific requirements.
American Railcar Industries (ARI) was formed in 1988 and grew as a repair provider as a result of acquiring business assets from ACF Industries. At that time, ARI manufactured railcar components and also provided painting, repair, and fleet management services. By 1999, the company was manufacturing both hopper and tank cars.
In December 2018, ARI was purchased by ITE Management, and in April 2019, it was announced that the manufacturing assets had been sold to The Greenbrier Companies. ITE continues to own the maintenance and leasing businesses, and in July 2020, it was rebranded American Industrial Transport.
Tank car DOT rules and regulations are some of the most diverse of any freight car style on the rails today. What are they and what do they mean? Well, this particular tank car style follows DOT 112J340W.
Class-112 designates these tank cars to be insulated or uninsulated carbon or alloy (stainless) steel pressure tank cars and are designed for top loading. Bottom outlets and washouts are prohibited. These cars may be equipped with tank head puncture resistance and wrapped with thermal protection systems. Tank test pressures range from 200 psig to 500 psig.
The letter J – Equipped with a thermal protection system that is covered by a jacket and tank head puncture-resistance system.
The next set of digits is the tank test pressure in psig; typically, 20 to 40% of the tank’s burst pressure.
The letter W following the tank test pressure, or the letters “AL” indicates that the tank was constructed using fusion welding.
